Scapescape

Yesterday I went to Scapescape. I was showing paintings and looking forward to sun, music and buddies. It was So. Much. Fun. I took tons of photos...many of which will be worked into future painting series.

These first three kids totally made my day yesterday. I had just gotten to the event and they asked my friend Christopher if he knew who "the artist who paints all the portraits is?" I raised my hand, me! They were all familiar with my work...and I didn't know any of them. I don't make a ton of money doing this, so that kind of recognition is the jam.

ALSO...I don't have contact for many of the new people I met/photographed yesterday. If I shot you yesterday and it was the first time we met, shoot me an email or add me on Facebook or twitter via the links to the right. I'll keep you posted on your painting!

These aren't necessarily the exact photos that I'll be working from (I took about a dozen of most people) and they may not be painted immediately, but they'll become source material for upcoming work. If anyone wants to be bumped to the front of the line, words like "I want to buy my painting" sometimes help. Wink. Wink.

I have more photos from the band portion of Scapescape that I'll post later. Right now I'm going to work on sweating out some of yesterday's Skinny Girl Margaritas (totally recommend these, btw.)

Happy Holiday! Eat some meat.

New Painting: Jeremy Crawford

IMG_8091

SOLD

Does everyone love Jeremy Crawford or what? That definitely seems to be the consensus! Although Jeremy isn't one of Scapescape's performing musicians, he is curating and exhibiting in the gallery portion of the event. Know what that means? He gets painted!

IMG_8087

Sunday should be really fun (I'm also looking forward to the Death Set/Eyeball Skeleton show tomorrow! May even check out the matinee performance.) I haven't taken any On The Town photos in a while since I've been so busy painting. And I know y'all want to see y'all's faces on the interweb.

Ima have to hold off on posting the last portrait because I'm running out of time! I'll give you a hint though...it's Katrina Ford!

TGIF!

New Painting: Michael Lowry

Mike Lowry
Oil on wood 12"x12"

This is one of the new pieces that I painted for Scapescape. Mike will be performing with Big in Japan.

What I like about this piece, in particular, is how loose it is. Aside from a quick base wash before a trip to the gym, I painted this piece in one sitting. While the details may not be as tight as some other pieces, I'm pretty sure you can still tell that my subject is Mike.

Mike Lowry

This may sound weird, but I feel like more of a real painter when I take liberties and make decisions in my painting (like the bright red ear,) instead of just painting exactly what exists in reality. That's partly why I don't work from live models. I aim to paint portraits as art and not as "portrait art." Just Google image search portrait art to see what I mean by the latter. No hate, btw, there is definitely a place for portraits for posterity, it's just not what I'm going for. Now that we have that cleared up...

I have two more portraits to post. See you in a minute!

Two New Paintings: Mickey Freeland and Brandon Arinoldo and a Rant!

TGI Doomsday! You know I usually keep my little talks all fluff, but today I am annoyed.

This rapture bull honkey... let me tell you about this rapture bull honkey. When I was in 8th grade I went to a small church school. My homeroom teacher spent the entire year teaching Revelations and showing us examples that PROVED that the world would end in the mid '90's (I mean mid- 00's...I'm totally young!)

That kind of SCARED THE CRAP out of little ol' me...who is already prone to anxiety (I got to have some kind of adrenalin pumpin in there to put out paintings at this pace, duh.) And I was totally naive. Did I mention I went to a small church school? There were like 12 kids in my class.

Anyhoo, when the same ding-dong taught that "people of faith" didn't have dysfunctional families, I fell out of my desk laughing, rolled around on the floor a little bit, and never believed another word he said. End of story.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way... I have two new paintings to share with you!

Both of these guys will be performing at Scapescape next Sunday. It's going to be really fun! In fact, I'm taking Saturday and Sunday off just to have fun. Until then, I still have two more paintings to go, Katrina Ford and Mike Lowry.

Except for a Woodberry brunch on Sunday (candied bacon here I come!)and a trip to get spray tanned (for my photo shoot for Baltimore Magazine!)y'all prolly won't peep me all week. Unless you catch me on the way to the gym, but I NEVER want ANYONE to see me on the way to the gym. Just sayin.

TGIF. Don't do anything I wouldn't do this weekend...

New Paintings In-progress

2 New In-progress paintings

What's up?!

You know, I'm just kickin it in the studio on this rainy Tuesday. I thought I'd post the two newest paintings that I'm working on for Scapescape. I have another photo sesh for this series this afternoon. It's all smooth sailing.

In-progress Detail

In other news, I found out yesterday that I will be featured in the July issue of Baltimore Magazine! I'm thinking tall heals and short shorts for the photo shoot. 'Tis the season. Maybe this article will be how my rich benefactor finally discovers me and I can give up the server part of my job description. Dreams do come true!

IMG_7484

Once I get through these two deadlines I'm going to paint my buddy Intea (happy birthday girl!) for the Beautiful Girls Series that I've been working on. AND THEN I really want to do a series of people in bathing suits with sunglasses on. Don't be scared! The portraits will be a lot more anonymous and I think they will be really fun. Plus, all of the photo shoots can be at the pool! Win/win...

Side note: Congrats to Drury Bynum of ShineCreativeTV for his Emmy nomination! That's hot!

Side note: Thanks to all my people who have been re-posting the link to my entry for H&M's Your Art Here. I'm so close!

I'm gonna go get back to work now. Embrace the rain.

Lady Piss Album Cover

Hey guys-

I've been saving this painting up until the album's official release... Back in March I got to do this piece for the band Lady Piss. The painting is based on an image designed by their singer, Noel Conrad.

Lady Piss Rough LP Cover copy

This was a fun piece to work on since it is so different from what I normally paint.

Check out the band's Facebook and myspace pages for more info and to listen to a couple tracks.

"Something like Post-Punk/Noise, Punk, Death-Rock/New, No, Dark-Wave/Industrial/Rock n Roll/Worldbeat... or maybe not."

Lady Piss Album Art

Also, I've dropped to 28th place in H&M's YOUR ART HERE contest. Help me get back on top by voting HERE. The contest ends next Thursday the 25th. In order to be eligible to win I must still be in the top 25 next Thursday. HALP!Thanks!

New Painting: Meghan McCarthy

Megan

I've been working away on these Annapolis portraits, and I thought, "why not make things a little more interesting and add another show in the middle of this deadline? Sounds like a great idea!"

This means something like 12-15 new portraits in the next 28 days. That's how I roll, son. I photographed Jeremy Crawford earlier and I have a shoot with Mickey Freeland in about an hour. Ima try to finish both of those paintings before the weekend.

I've been drinking sf redbull and listening to serial killer thrillers on Netflix while I'm working. It's making me feel kind of fidgety, but I think it's helping me get the job done...and keeping me from getting snacky, muy importante.

I think I'll stop talking now and get back to work.

Love, lovers.

New Painting: Scott Herbst (Doppelganger!)

Scott

So, on the day that I went to Annapolis to do my initial photo shoot I was greeted at the door of Tsunami by this guy. I told him that I was there to shoot models for my new series of paintings. He looked at me really weird...because he was the one who set up the show...but he was in disguise! Sike, it was just a new look, but it went over my head.

Scott (detail)

Anyhoo, I've been plugging right along and hope to be finished with this series ASAP. I have SO many people to paint right now! I'd really like to make time to paint some of the artists who will be performing at Scapescape, but that deadline draws near y'all and I'm not sure if it will happen.

My weekend is probably going to be straight stoops (although I hate to admit,) so I hope you all will have some extra fun for me.
